WHAT ARE FREE RADICALS? Free radicals are highly energized molecules that contain an unpaired electron. Many (although not all) radicals are highly unstable. They are produced through normal biological processes involving oxygen and can trigger chain reactions that produce more free radicals. Under normal circumstances, there is a balance between the amounts of free radicals generated in the body and antioxidants present to protect against them. However, additional sources of free radicals can shift this balance. Radicals are found in environmental pollutants, cigarette smoke and car exhaust fumes. They can also be generated within the body following a variety of circumstances, including exposure to radiation or ultraviolet light, air pollutants, pesticides and certain industrial solvents. Some medications and anesthetics produce free radicals; they are also produced in inflammatory responses and hemorrhaging. Free radicals have the ability to attack vital cell components, damage cell membranes, inactivate enzymes and damage the genetic material in the cell nucleus. At Physicianschoice.net, you can select products to support your wellness program. QUENCHING EXCESS FREE RADICALS WITH ANTIOXIDANT NUTRIENTS Antioxidants, the body's natural free radical defense, ceaselessly protect us from the adverse action of free radicals. The term "antioxidants" is easily understood. "Anti" means "against," and oxidants are those reactive substances which steal electrons from other substances, i.e., free radicals. "Oxidant" comes from the word "oxygen." An antioxidant fights oxidation by neutralizing the free radicals which cause it. An antioxidant can supply the missing electron or remove an extra one to stabilize the free radical.
